3 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues in Iowa City

January and February tend to be those months that drag along, in the midst of the cold, snow, and a general feeling of gloom. No fear – there is so much to fill those cold days, right here in the Iowa City area. Here are a few ways to make this time of the year a bit more memorable.

Sample 50+ Beers from Across the Midwest

In its sixth year, Coralville’s BrrrFestcelebrates the regional beers of winter and the brewers who make them – all in one place. Head to the Coralville Marriott Exhibit Hall Saturday, January 30 from 1-4pm to sample and purchase craft beers showcased by local breweries and those from across the Midwest. Proceeds benefit Coralville's annual 4thFest celebration and the Iowa Brewer's Guild. Tickets are first-come, first-serve and available at online. Hurry! This event is known to sell out!

Winter Games and Good Cheer

North Liberty has gotten creative and is introducing a new event called Beat the Bitter, which is set for Saturday, February 6 at Penn Meadows Park (currently referred to as "the tundra", for the event). The following outdoor events will fill the afternoon, so be sure to register online:

  • Indomitable Snow Run
  • Porcupines’ Revenge Obstacle Course
  • Siberian Scavenger Hunt
  • kickball tournament
  • fat tire bike races

What else would one do in a huge park with a winter chill in the air, after all? And there’s no better way for some adult good cheer than to warm up at Red’s Alehouse for a drink or two. Find out more at

Local Theatres

The theatre is always a good idea, but it is especially welcoming when one can only handle 15 degree weather for so long. Below is a summary of some upcoming shows Iowa City area theaters will be hosting. Be sure to check the whole line-up of shows at their respective websites.

Coralville Center for the Performing Arts

Presented by Nolte Academy of Dance. The whole family can watch Charlie Bucket as he experiences the wonders of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. This adaptation features songs from the 1971 film and newer songs as well.

Coralville’s City Circle Acting Company will tell the story of a vengeful English barber and what comes of his blossoming relationship with the lady who runs the pie shop downstairs. A great way to spend Valentine’s Day!

Riverside Theatre

Witness a comedy about greed, lust and the family ties that bind when a wealthy woman's untimely death spurs four conniving characters into increasingly desperate and hilarious schemes in order to manipulate one another out of her will.

Englert Theatre

Coriolanus is Shakespeare’s tragedy of political manipulation and revenge. This film features an Evening Standard Award-winning performance from Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers, War Horse (film), BBC’s The Hollow Crown) as the lead. When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on her hero and defender: Coriolanus. But he must face famine, the citizens’ outcry for change, the realpolitik, and the voice of an angry people.

This free event is part of the Englert Family Series and is co-presented with the Iowa City Public Library. During his concerts, Jim Gill leads parents and children to sing and play together. This “music play” has resulted in six award-winning CDs and gives families a fun way to interact with one another through music.

Don’t let the cold bring you down – our Iowa City area can help lift your spirits and give you a day or evening to remember!
