Venture into the Unknown in Adams County

I had never heard of Corning and the drive across the state was daunting! I was traversing outside of my comfort zone years ago to this small town of 1500 people in Adams County in Southwest Iowa. Do you know what surprised me? Small town people sure know how to plan an exhilarating “Lazy Days Weekend!” from July 28 – 30.

First, charge yourself up with a trip to Backgrounds Coffee Shop, uniquely decorated with doors that each tell a story, Iowa artisans crafts, and the best coffee this side of heaven! Ask them about the doors! For those who want something cool and refreshing try the Italian Cream Sodas! My favorite!

Who knew you could paint outside at various sites in Adams County and compete for monetary prizes during the “Lazy Days Weekend”? The Corning Center for Fine Arts features their annual En Plein Air from dawn to dusk. The juried competition showcases artists, each creating two paintings created on site. All artwork must remain in the En Plein Air Exhibit through September 30th and be for sale (artists receive 40%.) I marvel at the talented artists who travel for miles to compete.

Life is known by the moments that take your breath away and if you love classic and antique cars this is the place to be. Seeing all the cars at the 3rd Annual Johnny Carson Birthplace Society Car Show is a WOW moment. Registration of $20 is on Saturday from 9:30 to noon with trophies for FOMOCO, GM, MOPAR, Pickup, Street/RAT ROD, ORPHAN, Motorcycle, and overall show! All proceeds go toward the Carson House project. Wait, there are more cars down the street. You can’t miss the giant “Happy Days” style clock on R&S Collectible Automobiles. The collection of antique cars grew out of the owner’s love of classic cars.  They are even for sale.

The Battle of the BBQ Cook-Off is in its 8th year with over 40 cookers! Now that’s a lot of award winning wings, beef brisket, pork butt, chicken, and ribs to satisfy your cravings. Oh, the smells alone are worth the trip to the southwest corner of the state. There's over $4,000 in cash prizes, people’s choice wing contest, a beer garden, and a street dance. Plus Saturday’s noon meal is only $7 for BBQ sandwich, beans, and chips. What more could you ask for? A perfect day for a family picnic. (For more information call Chad at 712.621.1524.)

A blizzard of thoughts are swirling through my mind because there’s even more to see and do! Saturday heats up with the 18th annual Doctor’s Dash (3.2 or 6.5 mile run or 1 or 3.2 mile walk) sponsored by local doctors. Check-in is 6:30 am and the race starts at 7:30 am (or bring your dog along and start at 7:35 am.) There are multiple age divisions and medals awarded. (For more information call Marilea Mullen at 641.322.6276.)

The Corning Opera House Cultural Center is a vibrant feast for your eyes with their quilt show and self-guided walking tour on Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm! For $3 the quilter (and non-quilter) can enjoy a multitude of old and new quilts of all sizes, styles and designs. Pick up your walking tour guide of the historic building, then stroll through big, bright, bold, beautiful quilts that share love and tell stories, that will last longer than the hands that created them.

Tours galore brimming with history! Learn about the 1600’s Mayflower trunk to 1860s Icarian village to early 1900s Carter car to 1932 Carson house & more! Southwest Valley School tours are 10 am Saturday. The Johnny Carson Birthplace Society tour is 10 am – 2 pm on Saturday. The House of History tour is 2 – 3:30 pm on Saturday,  Icarian Village tours are from 2 – 4 pm on Saturday, and Kline Museum in Prescott's tour is 1 – 4 pm on Sunday.

Sizzling adventure continues with giant yard games, inflatables, a vendor fair, Farmer’s Market, and more. Saturday evening at the Adams County Speedway is CHAT Mobility Night with the annual kids’ money grab event, starting at 7 pm!

At the heart of this adventure into the unknown are great people! They are enthusiastic and energized to share these perfect summer days with you. These “Lazy Days” escapades are great for making memorable moments as we travel into unfamiliar areas!

Come explore the beautiful southwest community of Corning.
