Turnbuckle Fest is Back for More

Codfish Hollow in Maquoketa has made a name for itself as a music venue, and the big barn is built for fun of all kinds. The place was packed for Kevin Smith’s recent visit, in which he told funny stories about his family, the film industry, and his heart attack. Yes, believe it or not, he had us laughing all through his retelling of his health crisis and the full-blockage of his artery dubbed, “The Widowmaker.”

That’s comedic talent. If you missed it, don’t worry! You can see even more at Turnbuckle Fest, which is back for its second go-around with some of the greatest stand-up comedians this fine nation has to offer, plus live music and lots of elbow-throwing, chair-smashing, catchphrase-screaming wrasslin’.

Comedian Nick Thune, who you’ve probably seen on The Tonight Show or his Comedy Central stand-up special, will make appearances on days one and two: Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2.

You’ll likely recognize the voice of Kyle Kinane from his voice acting as well as many, many podcasts, including WTF with Marc Maron and Comedy Bang! Bang!. Kristen Toomey will be there to ask the important questions (“Stand-up is just the Blues without music, right?” and “What if we just completely ignored the authorities?”). Area comics Donny Townsend, Bobby Ray Bunch, and Chris Schlichting will represent the local scene and maybe take on some of the Scott County Pro-Wrestlers.

Oh, did I mention there’d be wrestling? Get ready to see some spandex at the Hollow.

Between all this laughter and head-crushing, cleanse your palate with some sweet tunes. The amazing Ron Gallo will bring his guitar and his giant hair to perform some of his signature garage art rock. Someone compared Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs to Thin Lizzy, which is totally unfair. Thin Lizzy’s got nothing on Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs. It’s like comparing apples and rotting head cheese. And the Vandoliers will show everyone what country music is supposed to sound like.

Why Turnbuckle? The name comes from a tool used in riggings, whether they be on a boat or a wrestling ring. It’s used to adjust rope tension and connect lines to posts, etc. It’s basically a link between two items that are great on their own, but that together create a whole new dimension of opportunity.

Come see this amazing, innovative festival from Codfish Hollow and Moeller Nights. You won’t regret it.
