There’s snow everywhere. White lawns, white tree branches, white fields, white parking lots, white prairies.
If you live in Northwest Iowa that is.
But it hasn’t been like that much the last few years. In fact, we haven’t had enough snow to even open the tubing hill at Horseshoe Bend Wildlife Area in three years. But that is changing this weekend.
The Horseshoe Bend Winter Sports Area will open starting Saturday, Dec. 5, and will be open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. weekends as long as there is at least six inches of snowpack on the hill. Prices for the 2015-16 season are $10 per day or $45 for a single-person season pass. Season passes are non-refundable and non-transferable.
The tubing hill, located at 1924 240th St. in Milford, features two runs as well as an automated tow rope to assist tubers back up the hill. When you’re chilly inside and out, stop inside the warming house to enjoy a crackling fire and purchase concessions. Then head back outside to enjoy the tubing hill once more.
In addition to weekend hours, the Winter Sports Area will also be open during local school winter breaks Dec. 23 and Dec. 26-31. Special parties may also be booked at the tubing hill with at least seven day’s notice, for a minimum of 25 people. Parties may be held on any day that the tubing hill is not normally open and cost $125 for the first two hours and $60 each additional hour as well as the regular $10 per person charge. Special rates are available for non-profit events. Please call 712-338-4786 to book your private party.
Throughout the season, check snow conditions and operating hours by calling Horseshoe Bend at 712-336-4786, visit the conservation board website or check updates on the Dickinson County Nature Center Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Don't stay stuck inside this winter when there's so much fun to be had outdoors!
