You’ve never been to a school like this. It’s Wurst University located in the Amana Colonies and they are proud to claim you’ll receive the Wurst education in Iowa. It’s all part of the fun at the first annual Wurst Festival in the Amana Colonies on Saturday, June 20th.
The Amana Colonies are quite possibly Iowa’s most famous German community and while they’ve celebrate Oktoberfest since the mid 60’s (this year will be the 50th Anniversary of the fall festival) Wurst Festival is in its first year. The Colonies have invited sausage makers from around the area to join the fun and organizers are expecting more than 40 different types of sausages to be available. Don’t think you can eat 40 sausages in one afternoon? Not to worry as many of the vendors are making half sized Wurst so you can try several. The sausage makers are competing for a People’s Choice award for “First in Wurst” and also for a judged award “Best of the Wurst” so you know they will be cooking up the best of their Wurst.
Of course, where there’s sausage there’s bound to be beer and Wurst Festival is no exception. The local brew, Millstream, will be on tap along with some locally made wines. Want some more German foods? How about potato pancakes made by the Amana Heritage Society or some homemade sweet treats from the Amana Church Ladies?
Lawn games, including a Kubb tournament, will take place and live music adds to the fun in the Market Barn area of the main village. It’s centrally located in the village and walking distance from numerous shops and attractions.
What about Wurst University? Have you always wanted a degree in Wurstology? Now’s your chance, classes are in session from 11am-5pm. Your “tuition” includes a Wurst University T-shirt, freshman-senior Wurst tickets, a final exam, and a degree as a Wurstologist. The President of the Wurst University expects everyone will graduate with honors. It’s been said that your college days are the best time of your life, but at Wurst University in the Amana Colonies they are the Wurst time of your life.
