The Historic Park Inn Hotel and City National Bank building in downtown Mason City was designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Built in 1910, the adjoining buildings have been completely restored to their original appearance and serve as an exquisite 26-room hotel and conference center.
You can spot Wright’s distinctive “Prairie School” architectural design from blocks away. But make sure you go inside, too, where you’ll ooh and aah over the elegant woodwork, skylightsand stained glass.
Incidentally, John Dillinger and his gang robbed the City National Bank during the height of the Great Depression. The gang got away with $52,000—unaware that the bank had more than $300,000 on hand that day.
Talk about leaving money on the table! Maybe Dillinger was too much in awe of Wright’s architecture.
