1. The Great Train Show, Council Bluffs (January 6-7)
Designed for children of all ages, the show features hundreds of tables of trains, accessories, scale models and collectible toys for sale as well as huge operating exhibits, activities for kids and educational opportunities.
2. Cherokee Jazz and Blues Festival, Cherokee (January 19-20)
Enjoy the hot sounds of music on cold Iowa nights with jam sessions and a big band dance.
3. Winter Festival, Mason City (January 20)
Beat the winter blahs with an adventure-packed afternoon at Lime Creek Nature Center. Activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, a winter scavenger hunt, games, and roasting marshmallows and hot dogs over a campfire.
4. University of Okoboji Winter Games, Okoboji (January 25-28)
Iowa's best party on and off the ice includes broomball, flag football, a chili cook-off, chocolate tastings, a polar plunge, fireworks and the Burning of the Greens.
5. Winterfest, Amana Colonies (January 27)
A full day of family fun featuring games, homemade chili, snow sculpting, music and other activities around town.
