Stop and Snip the Flowers at Miss Effie's

From the very moment I heard about Miss Effie’s Country Flowers and Garden Stuff, I wanted to visit. Who wouldn’t? It’s a pick-your-own flower place. A pick-your-own flower place! Seriously, how cool is that? Someone does all the work to nurture flowers into their blooming glory, then lets you come pick them. Had. To. Go.

Miss Effie’s is located in Donahue, not really that far from the Quad Cities. My mom and I stopped after a trip to LeClaire. I was practically giddy when we pulled in to the driveway.

The lady working that day (who was not Miss Effie) apologized for the state of the garden. Storms had done some damage, as had a large group who was there the day before. No matter, there were still plenty of flowers in the nearly one acre garden for us.

In exchange for $20, we received a pair of clippers and an old milk jug and were released to wander the gardens. My mom and I headed out to the end of the driveway to snip some brightly colored yellow flowers. (That’s right, I had no idea was I was cutting. But they were cheery, so in the milk jug they went.)

We walked all around and through the various garden plots, snipping whatever flowers we liked. I found some daisies – my most favorite flower – and snipped as many as I could. It was such fun to walk the rows of flowers and pick whichever struck our fancy. We each left with jugs plum full of beautiful blooms. And just in time as the rumbles we had been hearing turned into a thunderstorm!

Helpful tip: I’d suggest taking something to keep your milk jug from tipping while driving home or you could end up with some wet carpet in your car. (Which I may or may not know from first hand experience.)
