Puppets & Stories in the Park

This July, bring the whole family to Puppets and Stories in the Park every Monday evening, at the Durham Bandshell Park in Ames (Duff Ave and 6th St). Puppets and Stories in the Park is a family entertainment program featuring folktales dramatized as puppet shows with a few surprises just for fun! Shows start at 7 p.m. each week.

Puppet shows are fun for kids of all ages, including grown-ups. Laugh and cry at the antics of Monkey & Crocodile, Lion & Mouse, and visit with our puppet pal, Bosco Bowser! Newly arrived in Ames from Madison, WI, Reid Miller has been enthralling and entertaining youngsters and adults with stories and songs for over 30 years. There is a special beauty to the community that gathers for a Reid Miller show. The mission of every Reid Miller Show is sharing stories heart-to-heart. Reid Miller has entertained countless numbers of seniors, adults, teens, youngsters, and families.

Reid grew up entertaining. Acting and singing in elementary school, telling stories and performing in middle and high school, presenting puppet shows as a young man, and later becoming a full-time professional storyteller, folk artist, and performer. His acclaimed renditions of classic and traditional folktales and songs; contemporary and original songs and stories; and family country (contra) dance programs are fun beyond words.

Puppets and Stories in the Park opens Monday, July 6, with The Fable of Lion and Mouse and The Tale of Monkey and Crocodile, a fable and a folktale dramatized by puppets.  Count on singing along to some folk songs, hearing a story, and enjoying a few surprises for the whole family, too.  Be sure to say "Hi" to Bosco, Reid's puppet sidekick, too.  Coming week's show details will be announced at each performance, and in local and area media.  Catch them all.

Puppets and Stories in the Park is presented with support from The Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau Community Grant Program and in cooperation with Ames Park and Recreation Department. For more information, visit or

Puppets & Stories continue in a new Ames location, 129 E. 7th St, at 7pm the remaining Mondays in August. The new site is 1 block north of Bandshell Park, on the corner of Carroll Ave and E. 7th St. Area residents are invited to enjoy folktales dramatized by puppets, folk songs, and music for all ages. Tables and chairs will be set-up and spreading blankets is welcome for picnics at 6pm. Puppets & Stories was begun with funding support from Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau, and in coordination with Ames Parks & Recreation Dept. It also received, and continues to have, technical assistance from Valerie Williams Co'Motion Dance Theater. The August programs are funded by audience donations. Mark your calendar and come early for best seating.
