Old Meets New in Downtown Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls Downtown Main Street serves as a success model for the rest of the country. Main Street went from being totally economically depressed in the 1980’s to being a vibrant community for living, working, shopping, dining, entertainment and history. Cedar Falls was a recipient of the Great American Main Street national award in 2002. In 2010, the district received the national honor of being named one of the “2010 Dozen Distinctive Destinations” in the country. Additionally, the district is certified by the State of Iowa as an Arts and Cultural District. Offering an eclectic mix of shops and dining, our Main Street has become a vacation destination.

Cedar Falls offers a mix of modern amenities while honoring its past - where cornfields and prairie grasses meet progressive industrial and commercial development. Nowhere is that more evident than on Downtown Main Street. You will find the latest in modern fashions, art, restaurants, biking and running equipment, gourmet foods, and nightlife, all nestled in century old buildings. You can park your car or bike and stroll through the eclectic shops, take a walk on the trails, even visit a museum! The Cedar Falls Historical Society is an active partner in the downtown district, managing four museums in the neighborhood.

While visiting you can take in a local production at the historic Oster Regent Theatre, then spend a comfortable night at the Blackhawk Hotel, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. They are the oldest continuously-operating hotel site in Iowa located in downtown Cedar Falls. If not quite ready for sleep, Main Street also provides an active nightlife.

Renovated upstairs apartments on many of the buildings and a new industrial loft neighborhood recently opened on State Street, parallel to Main Street, make living downtown a very viable option.

With recreational activities ranging from kayaking on the Cedar River, exploring the 100 mile plus trail system, visiting a museum, to shopping and dining - all within a short radius of our acclaimed Main Street - Cedar Falls connects a dynamic downtown with its natural surroundings.
