Northeast Iowans always find a way to stay active through the cold snaps. This year is no different, as Lansing prepares for its Annual WinterFest celebration.
This year's event is set for Saturday, February 20th, 2016.
Organizer Sue Stirn pictures the day dedicated to the three F's: Family Friendly Fun.
This year's event is chock full of activities for both young and old, so strap on those snowshoes and head on over to historic Main Street Lansing.
Returning from last year are incredible ice carvings. These were previously a huge crowd-pleasing hit, created by Chain Reaction Carvings during the event. Last year, Chain Reaction carved for over eight hours, resulting in picturesque frozen works of art.
As one bystander said, "It's amazing just how long people will watch an ice carving demonstration."
For the adventurous, a guided trail hike up and over the beautiful Mt. Hosmer will bring some fresh, cool air into those lungs. A midpoint fireside break will provide hot dogs, s'mores, and water. (*Hint: Take a minute to enjoy the viewing area, as it provides a breathtaking three-state panorama with the cantilever-designed Black Hawk Bridge in the forefront. Can you say photo-op?)
Also returning this year is the hotly contested Chili Cook Off competition with a traveling trophy up for grabs. Stop into taste test and vote for your favorite.
Last year's Craft and Vendor Show surpassed organizers expectations and they are bringing another full schedule this year. Spots for the WinterFest Vendor Show filled up in just two weeks time this year.
While speaking with Sue Stirm, we could feel the excitement! She described this year's event and its new attraction-- horse-drawn sleigh rides. Each registered WinterFest participant will have the opportunity to enjoy a brisk ride along the frozen Mississippi riverfront with the bluffs and valleys of Northeast Iowa as their backdrop.
Look for more excitement with Turkey Bowling, the Hot Wheels Raceway, multiple hot chocolate stations, and much more.
