Are you ready to catch some BIG TROUT? The Big Spring Trout Hatchery is the place to go. Take a scenic drive north of Elkader on Gunder Road in Clayton County. This will lead you to your fishing dream hot spot, with more than fifteen coldwater streams. You will see the scenic views of limestone bluffs and tree-lined hills. From April through October, Rainbow and Brook Trout are stocked three times a week in the Turkey River for you to catch. There is a daily limit of five trout.
The Big Spring Trout Hatchery has many features to offer families, like kids fishing and a public fishing pond. Enjoy the beauty of nature, as you walk along the trail that leads to the Turkey River for angler fishing and the largest coldwater spring in Iowa. Primitive camping is available within walking distance to the Big Spring Trout Hatchery.
The Big Spring Watershed is a very well-known and nationally studied American site for gathering information on groundwater in limestone-dominated areas. The Big Spring Basin is a showcase for large sinkholes, streams, and caves. It's an amazing educational experience for kids to learn about different types of fish, to experience fishing, to explore caves, and better understand groundwater.
