It's August in Iowa - which means it's time to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather with friends and family! Add these five can’t-miss events to your calendar!
1. Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival, Davenport (August 3-5)
Bix Beiderbecke earned worldwide fame as a legendary jazz cornetist, pianist and composer in the 1920s. This year's celebration of his musical legacy will be held at the Rhythm City Casino. A new museum dedicated to Bix will open in the River Music Experience on July 25.
2. Highway 141 Garage Sale (August 4-5)
Now in its 15th year, the garage sale stretches 177 miles along Highway 141 and encompasses nearly two dozen communities from Grimes to Sloan.
3. Iowa State Fair, Des Moines (August 10-20)
"Nothing Compares" to Iowa's largest tourism event. More than a million people each year are drawn to the mouth-watering food (more than 70 items served up "on-a-stick"), fabulous entertainment, one of the world's largest livestock shows and countless zany contests.
4. CatVideoFest, Cedar Rapids (August 19)
This inaugural event at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library includes cat-inspired activities, food trucks, a beer garden and 90 minutes of curated internet cat videos projected on a giant outdoor screen.
5. Onabike XXV, Onawa (August 26)
Cyclists can choose a 29-mile semi-hilly route or a 63-mile challenging course through the Loess Hills. Onabike is the largest one-day bike ride in Western Iowa.
