Your Guide to Iowa's Indoor Active Play Areas this Winter!

Beat the heat, rain, or winter chill with a visit to these spots for active indoor fun for the whole family.


Perfect Games offers bowling, two floors of laser tag, and arcade games. Their most recent addition is a 300-square-foot kids zone with soft padding for climbing, crawling, and running for younger children. The Ames Parks and Recreation Department has open pool hours at the indoor Municipal Pool that ranges in depth from 2.5 feet to 12 feet. If your kids are interested in learning how to ice skate, the Ames/ISU Ice Arena has hours open to the public for ice skating, as well as pick-up hockey games and special events scheduled during holiday breaks.

Cedar Rapids

AirFX is a 40,000-square-foot facility with trampolines including trampoline basketball, dodgeball court, Laser Frenzy, miniature golf, and concessions. The Play Station is a soft play space featuring climbing, crawling, slides, and more. They also offer an arcade room that would interest older kids and a concession stand where snacks, pizza, and drinks are available. Sky Zone is a trampoline park with a foam zone, basketball, dodgeball, and blocks of hours reserved for Toddler Time.

Somersaults is a gymnastics center with public Open Gym (for ages 5-18) and Tot Gym (for ages 6 and under). Westdale Bowl has bumper lanes available for your littlest ones as well as an arcade and laser events. Check out their $1 Monday game specials, and their school holiday break events and special ticket prices. The YMCA - Cedar Rapids Metro Locations offer Open Gym hours and Open Swimming at various locations.

Des Moines

Courage League Sports designs adaptive programming for children and adults who have physical, cognitive, or emotional disabilities at three locations in the metro area. These facilities welcome ALL participants during open gym hours and offer classes for athletes with a variety of interests and abilities. The whole family will have a blast at Glow Golf where you can play mini golf with the twist of glow in the dark course lighting. Next to the food court inside of Merle Hay Mall, you will discover Hop-A-Lot Indoors with bounce houses in various styles including a castle, dual slides, and floral themes.

Monkey Joe’s offers kids age 12 and under a variety of inflatable houses and slides to bounce and run along in an obstacle course style. A special area is sized just for children 3 and under. Pump It Up is an inflatable indoor playground that offers daily hours as well as special events such as Glow Night or Parents’ Night Out. Rainbow Play is an indoor showroom for playground equipment with Open Play time available in two-hour increments. The Playground for Kids has an indoor tree house-themed play structure, inflatable slides, a ‘Wacky Ball Room’ and more.

Fort Dodge

Head over to Fort Frenzy where you can play laser tag, mini golf, bowl, skate, play arcade games or ride the bumper boats and go-karts. The Fort Dodge Rec has Open Swim hours at their indoor Olympic-sized pool and wading pool, as well as Open Gym hours for running, basketball and other active play.


The Marshalltown YWCA has Open Swim hours available and their special family programming includes movies and activities during school holiday breaks. Let’s Play Bounce and is an indoor playground that features six different bounce houses and fun for children up to age 12. 

Quad Cities

The family will find over 15,000-square-feet of indoor inflatables, bounce houses, obstacle courses and basketball, volleyball, and dodgeball at Jumpin’ Joe’s PlaygroundMichael’s Fun World has activities for all ages including a soft play zone, ball pit, laser tag, bowling, and arcades. QC Family Entertainment has a two-story laser tag arena, 32 bowling lanes, and more than 65 arcade games with some for every age. The city of Davenport operates The River’s Edge ice arena which has public ice skating hours and lessons available.  

Sioux City

If your family loves trampolines, head over to The Drop Zone Family Fun Center where you can also enjoy laser tag, dodgeball, an adults-only lounge with golf simulators, and special tykes hours for the littlest ones. If you are adventurous and ready for some indoor climbing walls, then the Long Lines Family Recreation Center is the place to go. They also have an indoor gym and offer special gym hours with toys, games, and activities for toddlers. The Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA has Family Swim hours and school holiday break activities open to kids. If you are ready to hit the ice, the IBP Ice Arena has Public Ice hours including extended public hours during school breaks.
