Lace up your running shoes and load up the kids for some family-friendly fun in Grinnell this weekend. Grinnell Games, Iowa’s Family Sports Festival, is a weekend of active events for all ages and fitness levels. Add on top of that a full day of free activities for curious minds at Grinnell College’s Summerfest, and you have a weekend of entertainment that the whole family will enjoy. What better way to spend Father’s Day weekend?!
1. Enter The Kids In The Lil’ Warrior Run
Kids ages 12 and under will have a blast at the Lil’ Warrior Run, the Grinnell Games kids fun run that is comprised of fun obstacles and challenges such as a tunnel crawl, hay bale hurdles, ladder step, etc. The run is at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 17, and is free to enter.
2. Make A Splash With A Colorful Saturday Night
Make a splash at the UV Splash Color Dash, the most colorful nighttime 5K. The neon, untimed race will begin at 9 p.m. and participants will start with white shirts and be covered in color by the end. This is a fun run all ages can enjoy! Kids ages 5 and under may participate for free.
3. Pancakes & Fun Sunday Morning
Celebrate Father’s Day with a morning of activities June 18. The schedule includes a 5K race, a pancake breakfast, free family field day activities, face painting, balloons, live music, an outdoor church service and more.
4. Cross The Finish Line With Your Kids
One of the fun things about the Grinnell Games is how many kids participate! Each year, many kids experience the rush of crossing the finish line of a road race for the very first time. Make running a family affair and enter yourself and your kids in the 5K race. The 5K is Sunday, June 18, at 8 a.m.
5. A Mud Run & Outdoor Movie
Older kids and adults will have a blast at the Warrior Run, a mud-filled obstacle run on Friday, June 16, at 8 p.m. Climb, crawl and jump over obstacles on your way to the finish line of this muddy 5K. Rinse off afterward and relax under the stars with a free screening of “A League of Their Own.” Bring your blankets and lawn chairs – popcorn will be provided!
6. Take In A Free Performance Or Hands-On Workshop
While exploring Grinnell, check out Grinnell College’s Summerfest where you can experience even more family fun, food trucks, entertainment, art, history, music and science. And the event is free to attend! It’s an all-day celebration of learning and discovery for curious minds of all ages.
