While Iowa City has a happy abundance of great restaurants, one you might want to try if you are on 1st Avenue is 2 Dogs Pub. It’s a casual, bar-and-grill atmosphere that makes it great for hanging out with friends and grabbing a few brews. It’s also a convenient place to have a pleasant lunch to break up the workday or relax on that day of running errands around town.
One look at the menu and you quickly realize that one of their specialties is burgers. If you’re into heat, you might enjoy the Firestarter Burger with Sriracha, giardiniera, jalapeños, grilled pineapple, and pepper jack cheese. Perhaps you’re in the mood to try a unique flavor combination. The Breakfast Burger has you covered with an Angus beef patty, fried egg, and cherrywood bacon topped with house ground honey roasted peanut butter. Or you might wish to try one of my favorites, which is the Spring Burger. It starts with a grilled turkey burger topped with guacamole, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, and grilled onions. If you prefer to sink your teeth into great veggies, the veggie melt is a nice option and is served on wheatberry bread.
If you are looking for some great apps, don’t look at your phone, look at the appetizer menu here! The flash fried green beans with a teriyaki glaze and served with cucumber wasabi sauce are absolutely delicious. The kick of the wasabi against the sweet of the teriyaki are a great finish to those green beans. If you don’t like vegetables, I think this is one form of vegetable you will enjoy. Originally from Wisconsin, I also enjoy the fried cheese balls here. They have a nice amount of cheese with the perfect sizzle from the deep-fried shell. Throw in an order of wings and chili loaded fries, and you have enough food to grab the gang and watch your favorite MLB teams this season. Their extensive beer listing and offerings of copper mug cocktails will provide some quality refreshment options alongside those apps.
The next time you are searching for a casual place to dine, you might consider 2 Dogs Pub. If you do stop by, make sure to try those flash fried green beans.
