January is a great time to gather information on outdoor adventures, activities, and family fun for the coming year. The place with hundreds of ideas is the River City Hunting, Fishing, Boat, and RV Expo, January 20-22, at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs.
The expo is the area’s premiere event, with more than 100 exhibitors filling 80,000 square feet with exhibits and 34,000 square feet with informational booths. Some of the most popular attractions at the expo are the kid’s indoor BB gun range, interactive games, archery challenges, and turkey call lessons. Other favorites are the hunting dogs and trainer exhibit, and the newest ideas in campers, RV’s, and ATV’s. Seminars cover a variety of topics including fishing, mushroom hunting, dog training, and hunting bear. This is an ideal place to pick up information on area parks, camping, recreational trails, attractions, as well as destinations a little further away.
The 2017 expo marks the event’s 15th year. It was first organized in 2003 by John Dalton of the Pottawattamie County chapter of Pheasants Forever. Each year the expo has grown by adding vendors beyond just hunting and fishing. According to Dalton, by 2006, the expo “just took off.” The event now occupies all of the Mid-America Center’s ground floor space with the expansion of recreational vehicles into the arena and all the boat displays.
