It’s that time of year again – as the air turns crisp and leaves change color, thoughts turn towards beer and bratwurst. The 7th annual Ames Main Street Oktoberfest presented by First National Bank is a great opportunity to break out your lederhosen and dirndls and do a little polka! This year the event will be held in Bandshell Park from 1-9 pm.
The first 1,000 people in the gate get a free beer mug courtesy of Paul Livingston, Hunziker Realtors. You can use that at 1:30pm for the tapping of the golden keg!
Oktoberfest in Munich, German kicks off on the same day! Let's celebrate together! Like the Bavarian event that inspired it, the Ames Oktoberfest will feature locally brewed beer, authentic German food and music. There will also be Guten Tag games including keg bowling, stein hoisting, the hammer game, and Jenga. Those attending are encouraged, but not required, to come in costume.
There will also be a craft beer tasting sponsored by Alfred’s Carpet and Decorating from 2 to 5 p.m. This will include all-you-can-drink tastings of seasonal beer from nine local breweries and a commemorative tasting cup.
You can tap your toes to the music of the Barn Owl Band, belt out a yodel to the live polka music of Second Chair Brass, ISU Tubas, and Barefoot Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen, then round out the night with the classic rock tunes of the Burnin’ Sensations.
