Five Great January Events

Start your new year off right with a visit to one of these awesome Iowa events happening in January!

1. First Day Hikes, various state parks (January 1)

Start the New Year with a free, guided hike in one of 27 participating Iowa State Parks. Explore Iowa's winter scenery with Iowa Department of Natural Resources staff providing interpretation along the way. Most hikes are one to two miles long, and many include hot beverages either before or after the hike.

2. Frosty Buns Race Series: Iowa Games Snowshoe Race, Cedar Falls (January 12)

The Frosty Buns Series includes three races (one per month starting in January): Iowa Games Championship Snowshoe Race, Winter Warrior Duathlon and The Sticky Stride. All races take place on public land in the Cedar Valley. Beginners and advanced snowshoers welcome to take on the 5k and 10k courses.

3. Cherokee Jazz and Blues Festival, Cherokee (January 18-19)

Enjoy the hot sounds of music on a cold Iowa night. The weekend includes pub crawls on Friday and Saturday night, a jam session on Saturday afternoon and a big band dance on Saturday night. In addition, a music clinic is offered for high school students on Friday.

4. 35th annual Bald Eagle Appreciation Days, Keokuk (January 19-20)

View bald eagles in their natural habitat at the Mississippi Riverfront and Victory Park & Southside Boat Club from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Personnel from the Lee County Iowa Conservation Board staff viewing points and spotting scopes are available free of charge.

5. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Concert, Des Moines (January 25)

Cars fly, trees fight back, and monsters are on the loose in Harry’s second year at Hogwarts™ School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! This concert at the Des Moines Civic Center features the film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets™ in high-definition, on a giant screen, while the Des Moines Symphony performs John Williams’ unforgettable score.
