Fishing, Hiking, Sailing - Iowa Has It All!

Iowa has some of the most beautiful countryside and best wildlife watching places in the world.  Now that summer’s here it’s a perfect time to enjoy the Great Outdoors with your family.

Here are just a few ideas to set you on your way.

Go fishing

Fishing is a great way to unwind and enjoy the countryside and fresh air.  Most of Iowa’s wonderful state parks have fishable waters and regularly run fishing tournaments and other events for seasoned anglers.  If you’re a beginner or looking to improve your skills with rod and line, there are introductory clinics on offer.  Full details and more information about events, licenses and fishing limits are available on Travel Iowa.

Enjoy a regatta

Iowa’s many natural lakes host some wonderful sailing events during the summer months.  Even if you are not an experienced sailor or boat owner, you’ll enjoy the watching the captivating spectacle of races, regattas and sailing championships that take place each week.  Check out the full schedule of what’s available on the Iowa DNR website.

Head for the trails

Iowa boasts over 500 miles of hiking trails right across its forests and state parks and the summer days are the perfect time to enjoy getting back to nature.  You can pack up a picnic, put on your hiking boots and walk for a day, cycle if you prefer, or perhaps take to the trails on horseback.  Many of the trails and facilities are also wheelchair accessible.

For those who prefer to travel on the water, check out over 900 miles of state designated water trails right across Iowa.  There’s lots more information on the Travel Iowa website to help you plan your trip.

In conclusion

If you love the Great Outdoors, Iowa is the place to be this summer.  Whether you hike, sail, fish, ride or pedal, there’s something here for everyone!
