Meet the First Iowa Woman to Summit Mount Everest

Jen Loeb of Jesup recently became the first woman from Iowa to reach the summit of Mount Everest. She will be the featured speaker during Friends of Fontana Park's fundraiser banquet.

Jen reached the summit of the world's tallest mountain on May 19 of last year, but the way was not easy. The climb is extremely demanding. It takes every bit of one's mountaineering skills, endurance, and mental toughness. One mistake can be life-threatening.

Following a great supper, participants at the Fontana Fundraiser will enjoy Jen's pictorial presentation about her Mount Everest climb, and other climbing adventures she has undertaken around the world. She will also show attendees some of the special gear she uses while climbing and will discuss the training that is involved. Loeb grew up on a small family farm near Jesup and graduated from Wartburg College with a degree in biology. Though Jen did not experience a typical start to mountain climbing, through her story, she will share how this actually helped her along the way.

The cost for the event is $20 per person and includes a meal from Wolfey's Wapsi Outback. Join in on September 17th at 5:00 p.m.-- dinner time. Jen will speak around 6:00 p.m. Please call (319) 636-2617 or e-mail to make reservations

A great event and wonderful Iowa story to raise funds for a park, animals and nature. You can read about two other great Iowa women (though one was only temporarily an "Iowan) on this travel blog and Imagine Northeast Iowa's travel blog:
