Family Getaways are Child's Play in Eastern Iowa

Even if summer has been busy, there’s still a little time for family adventures in and around eastern Iowa. Check out these unique opportunities to make the season last. Families can have a genuine “daycation” before school begins or even after.

Tour the Skies – Nine exciting zip lines are available through Sky Tours at the YMCA Camp, Union Park, Dubuque, IA. From the “Bunny Run” to “Over the Top” line, each zip features soaring heights, exceptional views, and custom take-offs/landings. Suit up the family for a guided two-hour tour.

Relax and Bloom – Late summer weather is perfect and flowers continue to grow at the Dubuque Arboretum near Marshall Park, Dubuque, IA. Pack a picnic, and walk the beautifully tended paths through English, Japanese, and other natural gardens. Bring along the selfie stick for a family portrait.

Hang with Butterflies – A short walk at Bellevue State Park, IA, leads to a Butterfly Garden. One of only a few in the country, this outdoor sanctuary includes wildlife that specifically attracts butterflies. Families can interact with 60 thriving species. Learn a little and laugh a lot as butterflies glide by.

Float Down a Lazy River – A real river voyage awaits at the Monticello Canoe Rental in Monticello, IA. Set along the Maquoketa River, families can rent canoes, kayaks, or tubes – then cast off for an afternoon trip. The river offers sandy banks to stop for lunch, hiking, and water playtime.

Supercharge Movie Night – Set aside the personal devices and head to the 61 Drive-In Theatre, Delmar, IA, for an old-fashioned double feature on the big screen. Arrive early for a good spot and for ample time to eat a family dinner, throw around a ball, and talk… remember that?

So pick a day and make some memories worth sharing after the kids return to class.
