Des Moines Mini Maker Fair Hopes to Attract 2,000 People From Across Iowa to Science Center of Iowa

All are invited to this “Family-friendly showcase of creativity, innovation and invention!” Makers, Crafters and Performers will descend upon The inaugural Des Moines Mini Maker Faire is scheduled for Monday, September 1, 2014 at the Science Center of Iowa in Downtown Des Moines.

Last year I attended the Orlando Mini Maker Faire and was blown away by the level of creativity and knowledge of people of all ages- and I expect the same here if not more! Chrissy Jensen, of Domestica shared with me “I've followed the Maker Faire online since its beginning having been a long-time fan of Make zine and their spin-off, Craft. I think Iowa's really been great at showcasing our tech startups and our amazing fine art talent - I'm hoping this Faire gives people the chance to see what some others have been working on in the areas of tech innovation (robotics, engineering, electronics), handiwork (such as woodworking), science demonstrations/research, innovation in play, work spaces, etc. Des Moines being chosen to host one of the many mini-Maker Faires is exciting.

There's so many talented people working on projects we might miss day-to-day, I'm looking forward to seeing all the wonderful (and maybe even weird) projects they'll feature. Based on some of the previous interviews that have been posted we are in for an exciting time of discovery and learning. I strongly encourage you to consider bringing a few donors for some unexpected purchases as well an open mind of some of the makers and new concepts that might be presented to you.

Also this is a safe place for questions so please don’t be shy.

Some of the highlights will include:

Balloon artist -

Canine cabana -

 R2-D2 -

Jerry Miner -

Latham Hobbs -

Also, Iowa State University virtual reality program will exhibit a 3D printer, augmented reality activities, Oculus Rift goggles and a virtual reality module See you there!
