CYcle to Ames!

Do you enjoy pedaling on two wheels? Then you’re in luck! Ames is a great bicycling community, welcoming casual riders and experienced pros alike. Several biking trails are near Ames and the surrounding areas, and the city has designated biking lanes just for riders. We support bicycling so much, we’re even hosting RAGBRAI for the fourth time this year on July 24! Keep reading to check out just a few of the cyclist-friendly businesses that you might want to visit while you’re here.

Alluvial Brewing Company. This local brewery is just three miles north of Ames. Their indoor taproom features 10 unique varieties of craft beer dedicated to quality and taste, while celebrating Iowa at the same time. Rather be outside? They offer an outdoor patio with seating, making this a great place to stop for a cold one before hopping back on your bike.

Trailside Rentals. Head west of Ames to Madrid, and rent a bike or recumbent trike from Trailside Rentals. They’re located just two blocks from the iconic High Trestle Trail. They offer bicycle and trike rentals to suit a variety of riders’ needs, as well as an overnight guest house and a bicycle museum. This is a great option for bicyclists who would like to stay overnight to check out the lighted artwork on the High Trestle Trail Bridge!

B Fabulous BBQ & Catering. Keep biking along the High Trestle Trail to Slater, where you’ll find B Fabulous BBQ & Catering. If you’re craving a delicious, home-cooked meal after a long ride, this is a great place to stop. They specialize in barbecue, including pulled pork, beef brisket, and pork ribs. Not a barbecue fan? Try the ham balls, fried chicken or an array of salads and sides. Sample their nine different sauces to find your favorite!

Skunk River Cycles. Where do you go when you need a one-stop shop for all things bicycle when you’re in Ames? Skunk River Cycles, of course! This "Best Bike Shop of Story County" sells bikes, helmets, parts, tires, shoes, clothing and more. While they feature Cannondale, Raleigh and Marin cycles, they provide service on any make, model or year of bicycle. Drop by to make a new purchase, get a repair, ask for advice or just to say hi to some fellow bicyclists!

Mary Greeley Medical Center. While safety is always the most important goal when bicycling, accidents do sometimes happen. Whether you have a scrape or a much more serious injury, Mary Greeley Medical Center can help. They offer high-quality, cost-effective healthcare services to both residents and visitors of central Iowa. This includes emergency medicine, surgical services, cardiac care and more.

We hope this list has given you some great places to stop the next time you bike in Ames. Still looking for more? Visit ThinkAmes.com for a full list of things to STAY, DO, EAT, SHOP and PLAN!
