Ames Oktoberfest Brings Munich to Main Street

It’s that time of year again – as the air turns crisp and leaves change colors, thoughts turn towards beer and bratwurst. The 6th annual Ames Main Street Oktoberfest presented by First National Bank of Ames is your opportunity to break out your lederhosen and dirndls and dance in the middle of Main Street.

“The German tradition of Oktoberfest started 184 years ago in Munich and is a party that lasts for 16 days,” said Cindy Hicks, Main Street Cultural District Executive Director. “This year the Munich Oktoberfest starts on September 16, the same day as the Ames Oktoberfest.”

Coincidence? Maybe, but like the Bavarian event that inspired it, the Ames Oktoberfest will feature beer, authentic German food and music, and Guten Tag games including keg bowling, bags, giant jenga, and Nagelspielen.

“Nagelspielen is a competitive game that involves driving a nail into a piece of wood,” said Edana Delagardelle, Oktoberfest organizer. “Having games makes our Oktoberfest more authentic and adds a lot of fun to the day.”

Of course, it wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without the beer. The first 1000 people to enter the gates will get a free beer mug courtesy of Paul Livingston Realty. Beer will be available by the glass, or you can take part in the craft beer sampling.

“We will have beers from 10 different breweries available for tasting and commemorative tasting cups,” Delagardelle said. “There will also be authentic German food for sale and live music.

1:30pm – London Underground Tapping of the Golden Keg

1-2pm – ISU Tuba and Euphonium

7:45-9:45pm – Vinyl Vagabonds

“It wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without polka,” said Delagardelle. “Second Chair Brass’ is a couple of guys from Ames who will really help you get in touch with your German side.”

If your style of music is something a little more modern, “Vinyl Vagabonds" takes the stage from 7:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.

Tickets are $10 general admission, and $20 with beer sampling. Get yours at
