Ames Itinerary: A Delicious Tour From Breakfast Through the Cocktail Hour

Pack your stretchy pants because today you will be full of local favorites. Let’s eat and drink our way through the day the Ames way!

Breakfast: The Café

While the menu is ever-changing with local, seasonal ingredients, the great quality, great service and great taste are always…well, great! The Café is a favorite for many locals, breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They are particularly well known for their not-so-run-of-the-mill brunch menu. In the mood for something simple? Try some homemade toast and breakfast potatoes that are crisp to perfection. Pancake lover? How about Nutella stuffed or lemon ricotta? Feeling extra hungry? The Café Mac and Cheese never disappoints and makes delicious leftovers, if there are any.

Coffee: Arcadia Café, Burgie’s Coffee and Tea, Café Diem, Stomping Grounds

A good cup of coffee can make or break your day. Our local cafés and coffee shops know how to make ‘em. Whether you like a slow drip, pour over, cold brew, cappuccino, or a tall caramel macchiato with skim, no foam and an extra shot of espresso… you'll be able to find it. Don’t forget to take a picture for your Instagram, or it’s like your cup of coffee never happened.

Lunch: Wheatsfield

Wheatsfield boasts the motto “Fresh, Local, Organic” and lives up to the name. If weather permits, load up a plate at the hot bar and enjoy lunch and sunshine on the outdoor patio. If healthy eating and supporting the environment and community are important to you, feel right at home at the co-op. Made from organic ingredients, choose from hot bar delicacies, a crisp salad bar, fresh-squeezed juices, and savory soups every day.

Afternoon Snack: Ali Cakes, Chocolaterie Stam

Don’t let your stomach trick you into thinking you can make it through the afternoon without a sweet treat. Ali Cakes boasts a flavorful lineup of cupcakes daily. It’s a tough decision to settle on flavor, so eat one and pack up a box to go. If cupcakes didn’t have you craving something sweet, chocolate or gelato may do the trick and Chocolaterie Stam has both.

Dinner: Aunt Maude’s, Hickory Park

It’s dinner time and the choice is yours. Do house-made potato chips, seared salmon, or tequila chicken fettuccine sound appetizing? Menus change seasonally at Aunt Maude’s, providing a flavor profile sure to make your taste buds happy. If your mouth waters from just the scent of hickory-smoked meats and you enjoy generous portions, the Ames Tradition Hickory Park should be your choice.

Drinks: Alluvial Brewery, Prairie Moon Winery

Whether you are a craft beer enthusiast, wine connoisseur, or like experimenting with signature cocktails, there are options aplenty to fill your glass. Alluvial Brewery and Prairie Moon Winery are ideal if you are looking for local brews you can’t get anywhere else and enjoy the atmosphere of having a drink in the middle of vineyards and corn fields.

With a full stomach and an empty plate, it’s time to call it a successful day tasting Ames. Don’t worry, there are always more options for tomorrow! For a full list of things to DO, EAT, STAY, and SHOP in Ames, check out
