ACTORS will close their 59th season with a hugely-anticipated performance of Shrek The Musical. The performance will open on June 12 and is scheduled to have only 10 performances, so you’ll want to get your tickets as soon as you can so you don’t miss this memorable show!
Shrek The Musical is based on the 2001 Oscar-winning Dreamworks film that introduced us to the world’s favorite Ogre. It’s a story about an ogre who rescues the beautiful Princess Fiona with the help of his loyal friend, Donkey. During their journey, they run into a variety of fairy tale characters including Lord Farquaad. The rescue turns into a love story when Shrek and Fiona realize how much they both have in common.
The musical consists of 28 cast members, many of whom have up to four costume changes. The sets require a lot of moving parts that must fit within limited backstage space. Set designers Philip Dykema and Peter Lundeen are expanding the normal stage space in new ways. Choreographer Mitchell Nieland will have characters dancing in the aisles. The music director, Joey Lienen, is planning a 17 piece orchestra. The lighting and sound for the show are complicated and necessary for the story to develop. Lynn Lloyd and Stan Rabe are co-directing the show along with doing much of the costume design and construction. They are working to provide the audience with as close to a Broadway feel for the show as the space will allow.
The cast is completed with tap dancing rats, three blind mice, guards, a dragon, and an array of fairy tale characters that everyone will recognize. Shrek promises to be one of the biggest shows that ACTORS has staged in its building and is going to be a lot of fun for everyone involved. So, prepare to be delighted by the greatest fairy tale never told in this exciting adaptation for the entire family!
