People always seem to remember the past and talk about how great it was. From cheaper gas to more amenities like drive-ins, the past holds a certain nostalgic presence over us all. However, the thing most people remember the most about the past seems to be the food...and that's where Peter Woltz and the Timber Ridge Country Market make their living.
Peter Woltz has been in the beef stick producing industry for several years, producing beef sticks for sale at various venues, including the Des Moines Farmer's Market. In 2016, Peter approached Osceola Chamber Main Street about opening an old-time country store like one that would have been found in downtown Osceola in the 1920s and 1930s. The store was even designed to feel like you have stepped back in time.
Timber Ridge began as a distribution place for the Iowa Food Co-op, which expanded Pete's desire to offer more locally grown and Iowa produced foods. Timber Ridge offers a variety of foods, including beef sticks, summer sausage, pastas, meats, breads, cheeses, and many more. The store also offers wines, old fashioned soda pops, candles, waxes, and other kitchen accoutrements. You can also get specially made gift boxes as well.
In 2017, the store opened its kitchen, allowing some of the ingredients in the store to be used to help people see what they might be missing. Customers can try one of the sandwich or smoothie otions every day. The store has daily specials too, including freshly smoked ribeye sandwiches on Thursdays as well as kombacha on tap to try.
Our downtown has developed into a niche market of specialty boutiques over the last couple of years. By opening a food boutique, we are adding to the diversity and unique quality of our downtown, which will help draw in local and regional shoppers. We help complement this local emerging identity," noted Woltz.
On the first Saturday of every month, Timber Ridge has a Bluegrass Music Jam session where local bluegrass enthusiasts can come play together and the public can listen. It's a way to draw in some live local music that's rarely heard anymore and still have the feel of the olden days. This event is the first Saturday of every month from 10am-1pm.
Timber Ridge is open from 10am-6pm Monday through Friday and 10am-2pm on Saturday. So the next time you are feeling like a little bit of the past, make sure you stop by Timber Ridge Country Market and take a step back in time!
