A Historic Rivertown Weekend Getaway at Backwoods

Are you looking for a unique weekend getaway? How about a historic rivertown experience? Come to McGregor’s Landing/Backwoods Bed and Bath in McGregor, Iowa.

McGregor’s Landing/Backwoods Bed and Bath is located in Clayton County Iowa, surrounded by rocky limestone bluffs on three sides and nestled in a valley along the mighty Mississippi River. And Backwoods is more than just a bed and bath – it’s also a bar and grill!

As you pull up to McGregor’s Landing/Backwoods in your car, you may feel like you have traveled back in time. You will see a two-story Old West Salon Style building with white wrap-around porches and batwing swinging saloon doors.

The first Uncle Sam’s Saloon was built in 1857, so it really gives you a sense of the olden days. The first floor has a fully stocked bar with an atmosphere that is reminiscent of what a riverboat gambling palace and frontier along the Mississippi River may have been like back in the day. McGregor was part of the boomin’ frontier towns during the westward expansion of America after all.

You can check the calendar of events to see the lineup of live entertainment at Backwoods Bar and Grill. They often have bluegrass musicians, can-can dancers, and a Mark Twain impersonator. While you're at it, have a mouthwatering meal! Eat the tasty (and messy) barbecue ribs or crunchy deep-fried catfish dinner.

Spend the night in one of the five beautifully furnished bedrooms, located on the second floor of Backwoods Bar and Grill. Each room comes with a private bath with claw-foot tubs and shower, pedestal sinks, and a private entrance off the wrap around porch. And for larger parties, rooms can be joined via interior doorways. The wrap around porch overlooks the picturesque views of the limestone bluffs of Clayton County and Triangle Park. It really is a sight to see.

There’s also plenty to do in McGregor and the surrounding area. For hiking and biking trails, picnicking, canoeing, and bird watching, visit Pikes Peak State Park or Effigy Mounds National Monument. And if you enjoy shopping, there are many unique shops to browse.

As you can see, Clayton County, Iowa, has plenty to offer you for a weekend getaway. The Clayton County Development Group even has a free travel itinerary to help plan your visit.
