Seven Oaks offers free mini ski and snowboard lessons for all ages with the purchase of a lift ticket and equipment rentals for both. After a day on the slopes, the family can relax inside The Lodge with fast food and drinks. Seven Oaks is open daily from December 26 through January 2 and Wednesday through Sunday all season long.

Sioux City’s brand-new Cone Park opens just before Christmas, making it Iowa’s newest attraction to experience during winter break. Take a spin on the ice skating rink during the day and slide down the hills at night during Cosmic Tubing.
Take a break from the cold and enjoy the tropical temps of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. From December 27-30, hands-on workshops will be held each day for families to build a take-home project together. Create nature jewelry, a fairy garden, an air plant sculpture or a fern string garden at the workshops. In addition to these registration-required workshops, several drop-in activities will be included with paid admission to the garden.
Hitchcock Nature Center is full of year-round fun in the Loess Hills. Bring your own sleds to slide down Chute Trail, a .18-mile sledding hill in the park. Or, rent snowshoes from the Loess Hills Lodge Welcome Desk and take a nature walk on the 10-mile trail system. No snow? You can still climb the 45 foot observation tower and explore the kid-friendly exhibits inside the lodge.
