While northwest Iowa still looks like a winter wonderland, that snow is soon going to melt and result in lush green springtime all around us! If you’re looking for family fun, here are some of my top recommendations for things to do in Sioux City this spring:
1) Go to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade:
Shamrock lovers, this one’s for you! Kick off springtime in Siouxland by attending the Sioux City downtown St. Patrick’s Day Parade on historic 4th street, Sunday, March 17th at 3pm. There are tons of fun floats, candy, beads, leprechauns, and green! For more information on St. Patrick’s Day parade and other festive events, check out the Siouxland Families Blog’s 2019 post on Things to Do for St. Patrick’s Day in Sioux City.
2) Hike for wildflowers:
The Loess Hills in general and Stone Park specifically have a huge variety of wildflowers throughout spring. Check the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center for a brochure on which flowers to look for when, then head out for a hike and see which ones are in bloom! If you’d rather join a crowd than do it alone, the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center is hosting a spring equinox hike or snowshoe walk on March 20th, depending on weather, which may be the first opportunity of the year to see some early wildflowers peeking through!
3) Hunt for Easter Eggs:
The Easter Bunny makes sure Sioux City has plenty of Easter Egg hunts for kids each year, and 2019 is no exception! The biggest is the iHeartRadio Easter Egg Hunt in Grandview Park just off Stone Park Boulevard, which boasts over 25,000 eggs each year!
4) Take me out to the Ball Game:
The Sioux City Explorers baseball team and Sioux City Bandits indoor football team both kick their 2019 seasons off this spring, and both are expecting big things. The Sioux City Explorers have won their division 3 of the last 4 years and are preparing for another similarly great season. The Bandits were champions in their league in both 2015 and 2017 and are coming off a second-place finish last year to an optimistic start to 2019. Odd numbered years are kind of their thing!
5) Leave a May Basket for a friend or neighbor:
May Baskets are an old tradition that continues in the Sioux City area! Sioux City May Baskets typically include popcorn and candy and are left at the homes of friends and family by ding-dong-ditching on May 1st. Old legend says if you’re caught, the person who catches you gets to kiss you, so gift wisely or run fast!
6) Stop and smell the Tulips:
Orange City, Iowa, about 45 minutes north of Sioux City, is known for its amazing Tulip Festival every May, widely considered one of the best in the nation. Orange City shows off its Dutch heritage with not just fields of beautiful tulips but also a parade, live dance and musical performances, kids activities, Dutch street sweeping, and more. The Orange City Tulip Festival 2019 will be held May 16th through 18th.
This springtime, come join us in northwest Iowa for parades, flowers, pastel candy, cheering for the home team, surprising our loved ones, and celebrating heritage. We can’t wait!
