3 Vegetarian & Vegan-Friendly Restaurants in Iowa City

Restaurants serving vegan and vegetarian selections are often difficult to identify when traveling out of town. Although dining opportunities are expanding for vegans and vegetarians alike, the selections are still narrow. Iowa City offers several vegan dining choices that are sure to satisfy vegan and vegetarian diet requirements as well as delight the taste buds. Locals highly recommend these three vegetarian and vegan-friendly restaurants.

  1. Masala Indian Cuisine Restaurant:  Formerly a vegetarian restaurant, Masala Indian Cuisine Restaurant, located on Dubuque Street, continues to offer a vegetarian menu. The buffet contains many vegan and vegetarian options also. The chef will decrease the spice intensity upon customer’s request. Diners are greeted by a friendly staff and the food is delicious. The Vegetable Biryani is tasty and the Indian beer is highly recommended.
  2. Oasis Falafel:  The restaurant is named after a Middle Eastern dish of spiced mashed chickpeas or substitutes. The substance is formed into balls or patties and deep fried. The restaurant, located on Linn Street, prepares vegan pita sandwiches, vegetable platters and other vegan selections. However, meat is also served in the restaurant. The Moroccan eggplant and chickpea salad is very tasty. The restaurant offers baklava and rice pudding for dessert that is out of this world delicious!
  3. Trumpet Blossom Cafe:  Trumpet Blossom Cafe offers vegan cuisine with live music performances, located on Prentiss Street. The café is an awesome location for date night. Vegans with a taste for spicy dishes will enjoy the Spicy Peanut Pasta. The pasta is served as a main course with seasoned vegetables and flavorful peanut sauce. A house specialty drink, known as the Needle and Hound, is sure to warm the insides on a cool fall night. The drink is made with scotch, house apple cider, Luxardo Maraschino and coffee liqueur.
