Iowa and creativity have a long history together.
While the following artists may not be as famous or have had such a global impact, they still create bright spots in the communities, homes, and lives of people across the Hawkeye state.
Bubba Sorensen got tired of some graffiti in Adair County near Greenfield, so he grabbed a couple of cans of paint and created a tribute to Iowa veterans that has touched more than half of Iowa’s 99 counties, as well as some neighboring states. Make it your goal to visit them all.
Valerie Miller has made northeast Iowa a more adorable destination because of her love affair with cows. She translates them in building-size murals on places like the Culver’s in Decorah or the Homestead Dairy in Waukon. But you can also purchase household size paintings from Valerie's collection for your everyday enjoyment.
The late Isabel Bloom, a contemporary of Grant Wood, created art out of concrete. Her simple but lovable figurines can be found in homes and gardens throughout the Midwest and perhaps across the country. The company she founded in Davenport continues her creative vision.
Make it your mission to seek out the galleries, studios, and workshops of creative artists across Iowa making the world a more beautiful place for us all.
