Clayton County welcomes you to join in on two family-fun activities happening on Saturday, May 4th. Start the summer season off with enjoying fishing at the Red Horse Fisheree or Backbone Trail Run.
Travel on the River Bluffs Scenic Byway to Elkader. Are you ready to catch a big 'ole fish? The Red Horse Fisheree starts at 7 am and goes until 3 pm. There are over two-thousand dollars in prizes. Be prepared to catch a slick Red Horse, Carp, and maybe even a Suckerfish. How many fish will you catch? You may just win a cash prize on the size or weight of the mighty fish. Get ready dust off your tackle box, sturdy pole, bait, and head to Elkader! There is a lot to see here.
On the edge of Strawberry Point is Iowa’s First State Park, Backbone. Come and spend time outside in the fresh air with the warm sun beaming down and explore the beauty of nature all around. Backbone Trail Run starts at 9 am with a 4-mile long walk/run. It starts off at East Lake Trail where the new buds are on the trees, rocky bluffs, and the lake. Listen for nature’s music with tweets from birds nesting up in the trees. You may just see a squirrel scamper up a tree. Will the ducks or geese be out on the lake? Then on to the prairie landscape of Bluebird Trail with wide paths. Will you see a ground squirrel peek up out of its hole to say “hi?” Imagine in a few weeks the grass becomes tall and wildflowers grow. Backbone State Park is a great place to spend a day and enjoy the start of the summer season.
Have the family come to Elkader or Strawberry Point enjoy warm weather outside with nature! We can't wait to see you.
