Adams County is Worth the Drive

The world is quiet here in Adams County! You can hear the birds sing, feel the wind blow, and enjoy life in the slow lane! Adams County’s Lake Icaria is just the perfect place to take a break from your busy schedule. While hiking the trails, breathing the fresh air, or watching the birds, you’ll get rejuvenated! There are many places along the scenic shoreline to teach your child the pleasures of fishing.  Expand your horizons and try kayaking for the first time (or second, or third time). Then take your big catch to your campfire. Add some special friends and s’mores, and you’ll have a night to remember! It’s totally worth the drive!

FOOD

Stroll down the main street, otherwise known as Davis Avenue, in the historic commercial district. Indulge your sweet tooth at Sweet Desires Bakery, which has a five-star rating on Facebook! Thirsty? Try the soda fountain at Hy-Vee or the special coffees and teas at the newly opened Backgrounds Coffee Bar & Boutique.

SHOP

Randomness, a unique gift store, has been open for three years and is celebrating with 30% off in June. There are patriotic items, special baby gifts, Crazy Train t-shirts, and too many eccentric pieces to list. Carver’s Ridge features custom engraving for all of life’s occasions. It's so worth it!

EXPLORE

Walk along Davis Avenue and you’ll discover R&S Collectibles and Corning Center for fine art. R & S Collectibles is for the classic car enthusiast. View the many antique and classic cars from various decades. The Corning Center for Fine Art (open Tuesday – Saturday) features a main gallery and atrium gallery. Both offer visitors a wide variety of fine art and artisan crafted items for viewing or purchasing.

ENTERTAINMENT

The Corning American Theater has the best popcorn around, plus great seating for handicapped individuals, and there’s not a bad seat in the house! Not to mention the digital movies: the week of June 16 features Baywatch and the week of June 23 features Wonder Woman. The Corning Opera House is on the National Historic Register and is quite a jewel. They're open for tours Monday – Friday afternoons or by appointment 641-418-8037. The opera house presents the outstanding youth musical, Aladdin Jr. on June 16 & 17 at 7 pm. ("Youth" is defined as young people ages 7 – 15 from the Corning, Lenox, and Villisca communities.)

All good things take time! So make the drive and bring your family or friends along for a wonderful time in Adams County.
