It's a Midwest Wine & Cheese Extravaganza at Brix in Iowa City

To find a true wine and cheese shop in places like Paris, Venice, or Barcelona is common. Finding something so authentic in the American Midwest is not so easy. If you find yourself in Iowa City’s Northside Marketplace, make it a point to stop into Brix Cheese Shop & Wine Bar.

I like to sit on the patio with a refreshing Pacific Coast Cider on the sunny days, but the warm ambiance of Brix invites you to gather friends inside for lunch, dinner, or a snack.

Whether you’re looking for an easy Riesling to sip on or you want to celebrate with a flute of champagne, you’re in the right place. Like a rich, blood-red Merlot? The man behind the bar wearing Herman Melville’s beard can introduce you to something that may have come from Dracula’s private stash.

Brix can help pair a traditional, botanical wine with a cheese board that can be a tasty meal for one or a snack shared with friends. Walk into Brix with an open mind to try something new. Something sophisticated, but not exclusive. We all know the local watering holes where the bartender says, “So what’ll ya have?” This is the place where you ask, “So what am I trying?”

Everyone at Brix will tell you, “We’re wine geeks, not wine snobs.” The Brix crew have a true passion not just for wine and cheese but for the bond it brings to so many cultures the world over. Colston Bassett Stilton blue cheese is considered one of the finest in the world. Pair it with the stout that is on tap to complete the renowned English pairing known as “Stilton & Stout”. In Italy, it is common to enjoy an aperitif, an alcoholic drink that is intended to stir up the appetite. Consider a sparkling white wine mixed with Campari.

Brix offers stellar service and education with every pour. If you’re looking to expand your knowledge beyond that, Brix offers weekly classes that aim to tutor in the wisdom of the wines, the grapes and regions they’re from, along with common antipasto pairings.

Everything on offer at Brix is selected by the resident expert geeks. If you’re looking for a glass to wind down after a long day at the office or want to pick up a bottle for a special occasion, Brix is where you need to be.
