True or False: Boone is home to some of Iowa's most unexpected destinations

Think you know Iowa? A visit to Boone promises to challenge your knowledge, and your stereotypes. Challenge yourself with the quiz below to learn about how Boone is full of surprises. Ready? Go!

Q1: True or False – Plains-dwelling Midwesterners need to head to the Rockies for real downhill adventures.

A: False! The Des Moines River Valley carves some serious slopes in the landscape west of Boone. Here, Seven Oaks Recreation delights adventurers of all skill levels with skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing on groomed runs designed to maximize fun. Drop 18 stories and more than 1,000 feet then ride back to the top aboard a dedicated lift. No ski supplies? No problem. Seven Oaks rents everything you need for a day of downhill. Afterwards, warm up in the lodge where a well-stocked snack and beverage bar and crackling fire await.

Q2: True or False – President Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in Boone.

A: False! America’s 34th President was born in Denison, Texas. (There’s a Denison in Iowa, too.) BUT Eisenhower’s wife, Mamie, hails from Boone where she and her family lived during her infancy. A team of dedicated Boone residents has lovingly maintained the First Lady’s birthplace, which is tastefully decorated with many household items that belonged to Mamie’s family. In the basement, artifacts commemorate the political duo and their contributions to America.

Q3: True or False – The Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad travels over the Bass Point Creek High Bridge, the highest steel interurban railroad trestle in the United States.

A: True! Hop aboard for an excursion through the scenic Des Moines River Valley. Through the year, the BSVRR delights riders of all ages with a Dinner Train, Dessert Trail, Picnic Train, Pumpkin Express Train, and Santa Express Trains, each crossing the high bridge, which stands 156 feet above the creek below. Depending on the train you ride, you may be able to book your seat on the Open Air Valley Car that awes travelers with an unrestricted, wide-open view of the expensive river valley.

Q4: True or False: Boone Valley Brewing Co. brews up some of the best craft beers in Iowa and in the nation.

A: True and True! Nestled in a charming tap room in downtown Boone, this brewery tantalizes visitors with three core creations and several seasonal drinks to please any palate. Note the wall near the bar that proudly displays Boone Valley Brewing Co.’s many awards, a testament to hard work and dedication. What’s more, in 2016 Boone Valley was one of three Iowa breweries invited to participate in “SAVOR: An America Craft Beer and Food Experience” in Washington DC. These are some serious suds. Bottoms up!
