The community of Atlantic, Iowa, knows its soda. This small town is home to a Coca-Cola bottling company that serves most of the Midwest, but Atlantic has a secret. They have darn good coffee, too.
Sweet Joy Shoppe is great in the summer, but I consider it a winter oasis, too. For me, winter is the perfect time to curl up in a big comfy chair with my favorite warm drink and a good book. When I entered Sweet Joy, I immediately wanted to do just that.
The sweet and heady aroma of the coffee hit me as I walked through the door. The shop was cute, quaint and chock-full of different kinds of gifts for sale. What really caught my eye was the shop’s large quantity of books. Shelves full of children’s story books, heavy chapter books, and novels of various genres sat patiently, waiting for an eager reader.
As I drank my tasty, warm chai tea latte, I perused the shelves for a new book of my own. I found many books that would make great additions to my shelf, but it was something else that grabbed my attention. Local candies, soaps, and knickknacks were scattered among the store. I found chocolates from Drew's in Dexter, and some great smelling locally made soaps – which I later purchased – from Tara's Treasures.
Leaving the cold outdoors and entering Sweet Joy’s warm and inviting atmosphere was bliss, but I knew I couldn’t stay all day. I thanked the waitress for my latte and soap and headed to my next destination. Now, on a cold day, I just imagine I am back in the little coffee shop, with that big chair and a good book. Thanks for the memories, Sweet Joy.
