1. Tulip Time Festival, Pella (May 4-6)

Citizens put their Dutch heritage on display with afternoon and evening parades, street scrubbing, Dutch dancing, a craft market, tours of the Historical Village and Scholte House Museum and, of course, lots of tulips.

2. Music & Monarch Festival, Elkader (May 13)

Learn about the plight of the monarch butterfly and what can be done to enhance critical habitat for a more diverse and healthy landscape.

3. Syttende Mai Celebration, Decorah (May 17)

The Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum celebrates Norway's "Constitution Day" with a traditional children's parade, Nordic dancers, guided tours and other activities. Museum admission is free all day.

4. North Iowa Band Festival, Mason City (May 25-29)

The largest free marching band competition in the Midwest includes more than two dozen bands performing. The festival also features a crafts show, carnival, car show and food.

5. Tivoli Fest, Elk Horn (May 26-28)

In addition to the traditional Danish foods and specialties, museum tours and parade, this year's event includes the world's first Aebleskiver (Danish pancake balls) eating contest. Professional eaters will vie for a $4,000 prize.
