Summer means outdoor events and festivals, constant activity, and family time. If you’re looking for family-friendly options for either a quick trip or a lengthier stay, Iowa City’s Curious Communities offer something for every age group. Below are a handful of fantastic upcoming events and activities to inspire your fun.
.) Catch Party in the Park in one of Iowa City’s public parks on a Thursday night in July and August. Families can bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy live music at no cost. Check the schedule for each week’s park location and entertainment.
.) The Johnson County Fair returns to the fairgrounds July 24-27! This free fair features a children’s tractor pull, County Fair Queen Contest, butterfly garden, hay bale toss, rodeo, live entertainment and much more. A trip to the county fair is the perfect summer experience.
.) The Iowa Soul Festival will enliven downtown Iowa City Friday and Saturday, August 4-5. It’s a celebration of African and African American culture and offers free entertainment, a fashion show, artists, soul food, and a Fun Zone for the kids. Live music includes musical performances by national, regional and local artists.
.) Coralville is celebrating its historic 5th Street Social for the second year on August 19th. Coralville Public Library will host all kinds of interactive activities while live music greets the ears of attendees and food trucks offer their best dishes. Bring the family for the celebration of Historic Route 6!
.) If you’re an active bunch, consider renting bicycles from Sugar Bottom Bikes in North Liberty and enjoy the outdoors on the trail system. Staff at the shop will be happy to help you find a route of the distance you choose.
