You don’t have to be Irish to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the Iowa way. Pull out your green garments and try your luck at one of these Irish-inspired events.
Imogene St. Patrick’s Celebration (March 9-17)
Events in Imogene kick off Thursday night with painting a giant shamrock in the middle of the street. Festivities continue throughout the week and include an Irish heritage parade, bobbing for potatoes, a Guinness beer chugging contest and crowning the king and queen of Ceili.
Emmetsburg St. Patrick’s Irish Celebration (March 12-19)
Prepare for a full week of celebrating in Emmetsburg. The week kicks off with the Jr. Miss and Mr. Shamrock pageant. Events continue every night and finish up with a big St. Pat’s celebration on Saturday, including a parade, a free movie, gathering of the clans and the crowd-pleasing Potato-Bar-A-Palooza.
Elkader St. Patrick’s Day Parade (March 17)
Listen to the sound of bagpipes as the local piper marches down the street at Elkader’s 25th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. Family events and live music will take place after the evening parade.
Tassel Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Wine & Small Plates (March 17)
If you’re not a fan of green beer, try wine instead. Have a glass of your favorite wine - sorry there are no green wines - and some “green” plates. Green food options include chips with tomatillo salsa and Irish-inspired dishes like corned beef and potatoes.
