Maury Muhm, Mel Kimblad and Barb Johnson have plenty of musical experience --- about 100 years between them, in fact.
The three started performing together with the Opry All-Star band at the annual Jackson, MN, Opry Christmas Jackson Style show and then became their own trio two years ago. Spirit Lake resident Muhm plays the guitar, Kimblad, of Sioux Rapids, adds talent on harmonica, kajon drum and other percussion instruments, and Johnson, of Storm Lake, plays guitar and flute.
Together, the three musicians make up the South 71 Trio and have played for two years at wineries, breweries, and private parties in northwest Iowa. They will perform at the Dickinson County Nature Center in Okoboji for the first time during the 10th annual Bee & Butterfly Festival Friday, Sept. 4.
South 71 Trio will take the stage at 6:15 p.m., following kids crafts, monarch tagging, presentations by bee and butterfly experts, outdoor games and teepee story time. The free concert will take place in the nature center’s outdoor amphitheater, overlooking the beautiful Kenue Park prairie and wetland complete with rehabilitated trumpeter swan.
“It’s fun to play in a nice outdoor atmosphere like that,” Muhm said.
The trio will perform classic rock hits, folk, blues and even a little bit of country stemming from the 1960s-1980s.
“It’s fun when you look out there and see people singing along,” Muhm said. “It’s not in-your-face music. It’s pleasing to listen to. Those two gals, their harmony singing, it’ll give you goosebumps.”
Amidst the smattering of the Beatles, Van Morrison and even some jazzier tunes featuring Johnson on the flute, the South 71 Trio will throw in a few of those own original tunes. Plus, they will make the relaxed atmosphere even more fun by telling jokes and communicating with the audience.
