My lovely wife has taken up the tradition of an annual Girls’ Weekend trip. She always returns rejuvenated and is just a blast to be around. So it got me thinking, perhaps it’s time for me to cash in on the good will I’ve built up and start a Guys’ Getaway tradition.
Here’s how I see this going down. I have an eclectic variety of college friends that come back to Iowa on occasion. But each possesses his own unique sense of what makes for a fun weekend, so I’ve put some thought into what would make for a memorable weekend based on each guy’s interests.
Tony – The Outdoorsman
This guy is always looking to be outside. He kayaks, hunts, camps, you name it. His suntan game is no joke. A Guys’ Getaway with Tony would involve some trolling for walleye at Clear Lake. Then we’d swing down to Newton and tailgate at the Iowa Speedway before checking out some NASCAR Xfinity Series racing. The weekend would be capped off with some intense kayak action at the whitewater park in Manchester and rappelling on the limestone cliffs at Backbone State Park. It would be an exhausting, but awesome, weekend.
Alan – The Sophisticate
Alan has always appreciated the finer things and lives at a slower pace than most of my friends. We would start with Frisbee golf at the highly rated Pickard Park course in Indianola. The long fairways are perfect for a challenging afternoon chucking discs. Then we would cut over to Knoxville and spend the evening sampling award-winning microbrews at Peace Tree Brewing. On Sunday we’d head north to check out the Des Moines Arts Festival the weekend of June 26-28. A day of mind-expanding art would be capped with a great bottle of wine and wood-grilled hanger steak from The Café in Ames.
Felix – The Wild Man
So it comes to Felix. To this day he is still the friend I can look to for an adventure-filled couple of days trying new things. When he comes into town from Chicago this summer, we’ll start by hitting up the Clinton County Fair rodeo in DeWitt for top-notch bull riding on July 19th. The next day would take us to Shellsburg for full-blown warfare at Adventure Park Paintball. They have six fields that provide plenty of opportunity to go home with welts of pride. That night would be capped with a trip to the Isle of Capri in Waterloo to see who can get hot at the craps table and enjoy a much-needed night’s sleep at their hotel. The weekend with Felix wouldn’t be complete without a stop at my favorite Iowa food spot, The Lost Cuban in Cedar Rapids. The Cuban-style ribs are legit.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go send some emails to Tony, Alan and Felix. Because before you can have a guys’ weekend, you have to assemble the guys.
