Float, Paddle, or Peddle: Go with the Flow on the Upper Iowa in Decorah

If you haven't taken in the quiet majesty of the Upper Iowa River yet this summer, then let the peaceful flow of its current lead you toward a summer adventure that you won't soon forget. The Decorah area offers some great and easily accessible ways to take in the beauty of the water while surrounded by the soaring bluffs of Northeast Iowa. Check out the following ways to take a well-deserved river break!

Float

Feel free to grab a river tube and allow the Upper Iowa to carry you away as the refreshing sunshine lets you know that summer is still here. You can rent river tubes at OFF The Driftless -- Wellness and Adventure Company on Pulpit Rock Road. You can even arrange for a shuttle service to pick you up at a predetermined location, so you can concentrate on having a great time with your family and friends while leaving the transportation to the professionals. Don’t forget to pack your favorite beverages and take the cooler along so you can stay hydrated out there.

Paddle

OFF The Driftless also offers canoe and kayak rentals with the option of hiring a guide to make sure you get the most out of your time on the river. Special reservations are required, but the options for planning your own tailored trip just for your group are many. I still have wonderful memories of a Memorial Day spent paddling in a silver canoe down the Upper Iowa with friends, and it's likely you'll make your own great memories that might just last a lifetime.

Pedal

Many sections of the 11-mile-long Trout Run Trail are in close proximity to the Upper Iowa. So get out the cruiser, mountain bike, or fat tire bike and jump on the trail to enjoy great views of the river and the public art installations along the way. If you need to rent a bike, you can do so at Decorah Bicycles on College Drive. They have a wide selection and will be more than happy to give you riding tips for making the most of your adventure and adjust a bike to your specifications. Make sure to pack plenty of water and a snack or two to keep you pedaling along on the occasional steep grades on this very scenic trail.

Whether you choose to float, paddle or peddle, you're guaranteed an outdoor experience you won’t soon forget in Decorah. And don’t forget to take the camera or smart phone along to capture the smiles that are sure to form as you recreate. So-- don’t hesitate! Get out there, explore, and make summer memories that will last a lifetime.
