Kids from aged five to 95 all love steam engines! If you’re on vacation in Iowa this summer, why not spend a day at the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad and James H. Andrew Museum?
Scenic railway journeys
There are lots of different rides to enjoy and the railway operates from April through to November. You can choose to travel in basic ‘coach’ class or upgrade to a special bi-level coach for even better views of the wonderful Iowa scenery. If you opt to enjoy an outing on a Saturday, you’ll have the added thrill of your trail being powered by a traditional steam engine.
Adults might enjoy an evening formal dining experience on a Friday or Saturday night, or perhaps opt to take the kids along for an afternoon on the ‘Dessert’ train where light snacks and scrumptious desserts are included in the ticket price.
There are numerous featured special events during the year including the world famous, ‘Day Out With Thomas’ – a must-do for the kids (and parents!) Enjoy a day out riding on the train pulled by family favorite, Thomas The Tank Engine and meet Sir Topham Hatt, otherwise known as the Fat Controller!
The James H. Andrew Railroad Museum and History Center is well-worth a visit. In the railways’ heyday, there were more than 1,000 railroad depots across the state of Iowa. The museum celebrates their history from the inception of the railroads right through the golden years to their latter decline.
The exhibition features many photos and a number of interactive kiosks.
Prices and opening hours
Prices for basic railway rides start at $20 for travelers over 13 years, under children under 13 pay $7, and babes in arms go free.
The scheduled railway opens on Memorial Day and runs through to 31 October. From the end of November through December, you can catch the special Santa Express train to begin your Christmas celebrations.
The railway and museum are located on 10th Street, Boone, Iowa. For more information or to make a reservation, call 1-800-626-0319.
