Best Brunches: Bubba in Des Moines

My husband and I honeymooned in Charleston, South Carolina, and since then we've been slightly obsessed with all things Southern. When I heard about Bubba, a new restaurant in the Des Moines area serving classic Southern dishes, I knew we had to try it for brunch.

The rustic, Southern-chic decor reminded me of a place where we had the best shrimp in Charleston, so we already were off to a great start. The restaurant has two levels. The lower level felt casual and included an impressive bar stocked with an assortment of spirits. The upper level was cozy with plenty of seating and continued the Southern-flair ambiance from the lower level. It was obvious that our server was not from the South, as he had a Midwestern accent, but he didn't skimp on the Southern charm, which made us feel right at home. He promptly took our drink orders and gave us a few minutes to look over the menu.

My husband and I decided to split an appetizer of the white cheddar grit cakes. They knocked our socks off. Every bite was perfectly seasoned, and the roasted vegetables alongside added another level of deliciousness. We scarfed those down in no time. While I had every intention of getting more of a breakfast dish, I ordered the pimento grilled cheese and my husband opted for the shrimp po' boy. (The nice thing about brunch is that you can order from the brunch or the lunch menu!)

My sandwich was exactly what I was hoping for. The ratio of bread to gooey, melted cheese was nothing short of perfect and was grilled to perfection. The accompanying bacon green beans delivered an explosion of salty, smoky and sweet flavors.

My husband chowed down on his po' boy so fast that I didn't get a bite, but he promised that it was fantastic. He mentioned the shrimp tasted fresh and that the batter was light and crisp. I stole a few fries from his plate that were piping hot, crispy and delicious.

I had just enough room for a sweet ending and spotted the whiskey pecan pie on the dessert menu. We ended up splitting the buttery, nutty dessert that was a fantastic ending to a special Southern meal.

I can't wait to go back and try the rest of their menu and maybe have a handcrafted cocktail or two.
