The Senior Variety Show is celebrating their 21st Annual performance with “Absolutely Animated!” August 14 and August 16, 2015. Close to 80 talented Story County performers will take to the stage with a variety of songs, dances, and skits to celebrate aging. The result is a two hour show full of lively acts that are injected with a dose of introspection and a whole lot of humor!
The theme this year is the world of animation, which will include songs and characters from cartoons, comics or animated films/TV shows. “The overall effect will be colorful and full of energy,” promises Show Director Mark Forbis.
There will be a smattering of short acts called Fractured Fairy Tales produced by the Rock and Rollers Readers Theater. The Senior Band will also conjure up the joy you knew when you would spend Saturday mornings in front of the TV set with your first best friends from the cartoon world. The Senior Variety Show has lots of fun and exciting things planned for the show, so you aren’t going to want to miss it!
Formerly named the Heartland Variety Show, this August community tradition has delighted audiences since 1995 when Story County seniors over age 60 first pooled their talents for fun and fundraising. Through the years, more than $170,000 has been raised for older adult services programs throughout the county, such as Heartland Senior Services, RSVP, and the Story County Freedom Flight. This year’s net proceeds will again be benefiting the Freedom Flight as they gear up for what will probably be their last flight. Several of the performers are veterans who hold this “once in a lifetime” therapeutic trip to Washington, D.C. very close to their hearts.
The Senior Variety Show inspires the community with the joy of aging and provides an uplifting and fun afternoon/evening of entertainment for the whole family. This show is produced entirely by a network of volunteers who form a creative team, production team, a working Board and much more. The show is presented with support from the Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau Community Grant Program.
