From Morocco to Waukee with a few stops in between, Hassan Atarmal serves up fresh and fast Mediterranean cuisine – just like the name of his restaurant suggests.
Instead of grabbing the standard sandwich for lunch, head over to Fresh Mediterranean Express at 15 NE Carefree Lane, just off of Hickman in Waukee. Hassan, his wife, Jeni, and the rest of the team will serve up a gyro, falafel, or kabobs with the freshest of ingredients and amazing service. Homemade hummus, sauces, and dressings add to the vitality of the meal. And if the weather is nice, there are a couple of tables outside under umbrellas to get some fresh air with your fresh meal.
I ordered the Fresh Platter, because it sounded like a good variety to sample. I was served up a plate of rice, sun-dried tomato hummus, Greek salad, gyro meat, pita, and two sauces (tzatziki and spicy peanut were the ones I chose). Tasty. Filling. Fast. Healthy.
A vibrant chalk menu on the wall added to the décor, revealing the variety of Mediterranean entrees, sides, salads, appetizers, and desserts. The back wall had cookbooks and Mediterranean deco items for sale. The fresh hummus and sauces were also packaged for sale – and they cater, too.
Eating out with little kids? No problem. The menu includes PBJ, grilled cheese on pita, or hot dogs. Mom and dad can have an international experience, even with the kid who won’t eat anything but hot dogs.
Several awards were posted, even though the restaurant has only been opened since 2014. If they keep up the great service and fresh food, they’ll win more. They’ve scored highly in my book!
