This time of year has me focused on the sweeter side of Iowa!
For the last year anyone could hear me yell over my cube to my co-workers – “anyone want to run up to Cedar Falls and get me a cupcake?” Recently it changed to West Des Moines because my beloved Scratch Cupcakery has finally expanded to my neck of the woods. The line was long, but fast and the cupcakes delicious. The flavors change daily which, unfortunately for my waist line, gives me motivation to go more often. Scratch is just one of my favorite sweet stops in Iowa. Here are just a few more.
“Awesome!” That’s what I said the first moment I stepped into Goodie’s Handmade Candies in Spirit Lake. The smell of chocolates, caramel and fudge fill the room as an endless array of treats can be seen everywhere you look. Be warned. Panic will set in – how do you choose?
When you visit Breitbach’s Country Dining in Balltown you have to save room for pie. The restaurant, Iowa’s oldest, has an amazing story, remarkable food and more seating for the entire town of Balltown (pop. 51). Their home style cooking led them to receive an award from the James Beard Foundation – the highest award a restaurant can receive. All of their food is delicious, but since we are talking sweets, the pies have flaky crusts, sweet fillings and are made fresh daily. Take it to go if you have to.
“The best cake I’ve ever eaten” is how my husband describes Fairfield’s Yummy’s Gourmet Cakes. (He tells everyone each time that Fairfield is mentioned). Bigger then a cupcake, but individually sized with bold flavors that melt in your mouth. They have two bakery locations, but a long list of locations where you can find them.
Where do you like to indulge in Iowa?
