The idea of an Iowa golf trail was started by a group of courses in 2011, but never really got off the tee box. In the fall of 2013, Russ Appel (general manager at Briggs Woods) and I (general manager at Fox Ridge Golf Club), got together to develop a statewide trail to begin in the spring of 2014. Our main goals are to promote golf in Iowa, expose Iowa golfers to great courses across the state and also to provide quality entertainment.
We sat down and divided the state of Iowa into four separate regions with three or four highly regarded golf courses in each quadrant. When travelers and golf enthusiasts visit iowagolftrail.com they’ll find golf packages, specials and events. And in an effort to make planning your next golf trip easy, the site also includes a list of popular restaurants, attractions and hotels nearby.
In The Zone
Earlier this season we announced a partnership with the Golf Channel, which brought with it the opportunity to use their technology for online reservations. Golfers will be able to go to one centralized location on iowagolftrail.com to book tee times at any course on the trail. (There are currently five courses using the system; we are hoping to add most of the trail courses into this system by 2015.) It also means that as a golf courses update information, that information will automatically be updated on iowagolftrail.com as well. People will not have to hunt around and visit multiple websites to check tee times or local tournament information.
When looking for ideas for an Iowa weekend getaway or day trip, travelers should keep in mind that many of the trail’s courses have great weekend events and the trail website is a great place to find out about events in the summer.
Contact me if you have ideas or would like more information. I can’t wait to see you out on the Iowa Golf Trail!
